Disabled People Experience Global Warming Impacts More Keenly

The global warming impacts on disabled people are probably immense. It will grow as climate change worsens. And it concerns us all.

Are you a person with a disability? Or a family member or friend? Your story is important. Tell it here.

Global warming impacts will be greatly felt by disabled people.

Thousands of people died in the European heatwave of 2003 because of their frailty, reduced ability to cope with hot weather and inadequacy of building design.

And Hurricane Katrina also affected mobility impaired and elderly people greatly.

So, why is it important to look at the global warming impacts on disabled people?

Well, because:

  • In many countries around 25%-or more- of the population has some kind of disability;
  • This directly affects many families, that care for members who have disabilities and lose income;
  • No-one is immune from disability, through accident, illness or war;
  • Disability is here to stay – it cannot be cured with any magic potion;
  • A society that cannot look after its most vulnerable people is not sustainable and not a civil one;
  • If we can find ways to safeguard disabled people from effects of global warming, knowing how to safeguard all of us may become clearer and easier;
  • Engaging with the dependence and vulnerability in others will finally transform our thinking about the world – as interdependent with a need to care;
  • Many other reasons.

How may global warming affect disabled people?

  • Heat waves are felt more keenly by them;
  • They are not as easily able to "outrun" global warming disasters;
  • Their poverty means they cannot buy their way out – for now;
  • As global warming bites, states may redirect disability resources to other priorities;
  • Population reduction policies may target disabled people first;
  • inaccessible disaster shelters;
  • disruption of aids, equipment, medication supplies;
  • Many unforeseen effects as no-one is mapping them.

You can see how important it is to tell your story - about global warming impacts upon disabled people? Tell it here.
