Energy audit as a stand alone business

What is the outlook for a person who gets certification in terms of employment or to start a stand alone business residential? commercial? At $100 or so per energy audit, one would have to do quite a few to earn a living.
Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the great questions.
The outlook for green jobs and energy auditing is very strong. In fact, in our February newsletter we’ll be talking about a PEW charitable trust study that shows the growth and value of green jobs in the economy. The amazing thing about the energy auditing business is that you can become a "consultant" overnight. You do not need the trappings of a "business" to start with. You can get yourself an LLC, (very inexpensive), get some basic equipment (maybe $100 or so), and start doing energy audits. As the business grows you can hire employees, rent space, get vehicles and the like. In other words, the business is totally scalable. You can start at the ground floor and work up, or if you own an existing business, you can plug the energy auditing into the existing structure you have.
Costs of an audit. Again, this is one of the great things about this business. The market is virtually wide open. What you charge is a very scalable number. If you are doing simple eye-ball audits that last about 30 minutes, you can charge $99 and make a good living. This model requires a lot more customers, but a lot less work on your part. One solution is to start out offering 2 options – the $99 quick check and then a $250 full check. This marketing technique allows you to "get in the door" with the $99 and then upsell from there, by showing them the things they are missing. The bottom line here, there is no “set price” for an audit. You can work with whatever your marketing strategy is. We’ve seen audits that cost over $900 for a home. We’ve seen some contractors that will do an audit for free, so long as you use their contracting services. Others will do nothing but the audit, maintaining a unique selling proposition of "arms-length" from the recommendations to the installation.
The market is ripe for the picking, the only thing it requires is knowledge like you will acquire in the Denby Energy programs and the desire to make a difference by making money saving energy.
No matter where you start we have the programs (Denby Energy, BPI, RESNET, Commercial Level 2) to help you take it to the next level. Additionally, we have a tremendous advantage over anyone else in this business by offering excellent sales and marketing tools and resources to help auditors start and grow their businesses.
