Energy Auditing For Girls

by Jakki

Hi,

I'm a girl and interested in energy auditing as a job or my business. But I'm not keen to go to all kinds of folks homes by myself and for me that's a big barrier to getting into this area. And if I would go with a partner my income is halved.

Does your course cover anything like personal safety strategies for energy auditors?

Are there female home energy auditors that could share their tips here?

Thanks!

Thanks for your question.

Our materials do not directly cover the question of personal safety. However, it is always important to make certain you are not putting yourself in a vulnerable position, no matter what career you choose.

With Energy Auditing, the person most likely to be "uncomfortable" is the homeowner, who is allowing a stranger to enter their home. That said, one of the best tips for personal safety is to make sure that you are not going on sales calls without leaving a record of where you are going and who you are meeting with.

With today’s technology, it is easier than ever to leave voice mails, send text messages and even pictures and video of a location all with your cell phone.

You do not need a separate partner, but only someone you can relay the information to prior to your appointment, so you are certain you have a responsible person knowing where you are going (a good friend, family member, etc.).

On top of that, the second most important thing you can do is to let the homeowner know that you are leaving this information, so they see that you are not alone, but in fact, someone is checking up on you. We would recommend that you do this in a noticeable, but discrete way. This will let the homeowner know you are being safe, but will not insult them with the implication that you think they are out to harm you. For example, at the same time the homeowner is opening the door, you can be talking on your cell-phone and simply say, "Hi, (responsible person), I just wanted to check in with you and let you know I am here at ……. (address). I’ll call you when I am leaving, in about 1 hour."

Hope that helps.
