Al Gore presents Mai Iskander with award at the Nashville Film Festival
This is a brand new movie by Mai Iskander, scooping up awards. It's about recycling, and a life among trash by a remarkable community of people in Cairo.
Traditionally the Zabbaleen collect Cairo's trash to recycle most of it. An extremely valuable skill. but increasingly this trade is being supplanted by mechanical means of waste collection. Results: loss of income and way of life for the Zabbaleen. Loss of valuable recycling processes.
To add insult to injury the Zabbaleen's pigs have been killed in Egypt's misguided complete cull of this animals because of the swine flu hysteria.
This documentary won the Reel Current award, personaly chosen by Al Gore as a movie showing great insight into a global issue.
You can catch it as it does the film festival tour just now.
