Green Roofs Hawaii
by Amy Ashton
(Kailua, HI)
We are a small all veteran-owned company just starting up here in Hawaii. We are going to be installing and maintaining Green Roofs. We use a grid system which will not put dirt directly onto the roof.
We are in dire need of start up money and need advice on where to look for grants.
Any help will be appreciated!
Aloha,
Amy
Great business Amy! No direct grants or incentives to your business but indirectly your business may benefit from the
Energy-Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction. Your customers benefit, so will you. The trick is to check whether green roofs come under this provision. Perhaps
a good green roof can reduce a building's energy use by 50%. It offers a tax deduction of $1.80 per square foot to owners, or tenants, of new or existing buildings who install (1) interior lighting; (2) building envelope, or (3) heating, cooling, ventilation, or hot water systems whicht reduce the building’s total energy and power cost. This has to be in the order of 50% or more in comparison to a building meeting minimum requirements set by ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001.
These energy savings must be calculated using qualified
computer software approved by the IRS. Also, deductions of $0.60 per square foot are available to owners of buildings in which individual lighting, building envelope, or heating and cooling systems meet target levels that would reasonably contribute to an overall building savings of 50% if additional systems were installed.
