Insurance for energy auditors?

I have read of a requirement for energy auditors to have insurance for public liability if they certify a home for the federal tax credit for energy efficient homes.
How much is that costing an auditor and do we need it for one of the courses you mention here like Denby Energy and the Energy Institute?
Thanks!

Dear John,
Thanks for the question.
There is no current requirement for home auditors to have insurance of which we are aware. It is always a smart idea to find insurance, but if you are set up as an LLC (which I hope you are, because its cheap and simple) you have a lot of liability protections already. Additionally, if an auditor is not doing the trade work-retrofitting, replacing, modifying elements of the home, there is not a lot to insure against. We recommend that the auditor not take on the job of doing the work, but rather associate with a trade professional that is not only insured, but also licensed to do the work. Some of the auditors that come through our program are trades people, but most are not and that does not slow them down at all.
As far as what you were reading - Not sure exactly what you were reading, but there is a bill circulating in Congress that is seeking to impose some command-and-control requirements associated with energy efficiency. We are not proponents of this approach. The government has great influence on encouraging energy efficiency, but when it begins putting requirements on free market opportunities, it will actually contract and limit the growth of this incredibly important industry.
What this industry needs is government approval of a 2 Tier standard for energy auditing/efficiency. For those customers that want the Energy Star type level of certification, then create a standard for that. But for the 110 million other homes in the United States, who want to save a lot of money on energy (upwards of $700 a year) without having to invest a huge sum, then recognize a standard like Denby Energy. We train people to get 80% of the savings of the high-tech audit with only 20% of the effort and investment. How does the Denby Energy System work? The Denby Energy system is simply based on the Law of Diminishing returns. We teach you to identify and eliminate wasted energy. And in the average home and business there is a huge amount of low-hanging fruit. For example, you can save upwards of $115 a year by turning down your water heater . Why then doesn’t every home and business in America do that? Because they all think that energy auditing/efficiency has to be hard, that it takes lots of tools, education, time and money to save energy. This is the misinterpretation that is keeping energy efficiency from truly changing the way we live in this country. It is Denby Energy’s mission and function to teach people how easy this process can be. And in the process, to empower a new job base of auditors that can reach out to every home and business in America and meet this often simple, but ignored key to saving money.
The Denby Energy course will provide you with all the information you need to become and auditor and to get your business started and making money saving energy.
Thanks
