Governments Offer All Kinds Of Solar Energy Grants

Solar energy grants serve a good purpose. The more renewable energy appliances you and I install, the better it is for the planet. Many governments recognise that.

Offering such grants is good policy, helping to reduce effects of global warming and our dependency on expensive and polluting fossil fuels.

In looking for these energy grants it will assist your search of course by learning first about what is solar energy and what is the advantage of renewable energy.

Many countries and local governments are now offering renewable energy grants and rebates as well as tax incentives. These have become attractive to many consumers as one advantage of renewable energy. Renewable energy researchers can also benefit from research grants.

It would be an impossible task to list them all globally as initiatives are added regularly and are spread over local, state, provincial and national governments. Also, policies on kinds of renewable energy sources that may benefit from grants change from time to to time.

Some prominent voices are now again extolling nuclear energy to save us from global warming. It remains to be seen what that means in commitment to truly renewable energy and solar energy grants policy.

However, let's proceed under the assumption that solar energy grants are around for the long haul, most likely in tandem with other energy sources.

Let's have a look.

Solar energy grants—USA

In the USA the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is probable your best first port of call. EERE is engaged in many strategies to increase the use of renewable energy and improve the required technology.

In 2004 EERE awarded $506 Million in financial assistance. It is not involved in individual incentives but you can access a comprehensive US solar energy grants database here.

For direct grants to you, and for other incentives you should contact your local government authority first. The trail will lead to grants and rebates tailored to your solar water heating system, or other form of renewable energy appliance.

...or not. In which case you will immediately enroll in your local course "how to become an effective environmental lobbyist 101." Also, there is good general information available on all kinds of solar energy grants and tax incentives.

In addition, you may also be interested also in this database of energy efficiency programs that can save you money.

Got A Hot Grant Tip? Need To Find A Grant?

Solar energy grants, renewable energy grants, alternative energy grants, tax incentives and rebates.

There are many and they keep changing.

That's where you come in! You can help others find an incentive program in their location.

Please enter your tip on renewable energy grants that you are aware of, or that you have accessed. This can be for any type of renewable energy, from large hydro-electric projects to domestic solar heating. For hybrid car tax rebates to fuel conversions.

Thank you!

Solar energy grants—Australia

The Australian Federal government’s Office of Renewable Energy Regulator (ORER) administers the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET). Don’t you love these intergalactic acronyms?

It issues Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) to renewable energy power stations, some solar water heater installations, and small photovoltaic, wind or mini hydro-electric system installations.

These REC’s can be traded like shares or money.

Don’t dismiss them as mere play money!

For a two panel solar hot water system, the REC currently equals about AUS$1,000, dependent on the geographical location of the water heater.

Three further Australian Departments that offer information on solar energy grants and assistance for research or development projects or new renewable energy power stations are

  • Australian Greenhouse Office
  • Department of Environment and Heritage
  • Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources

Australian State and Territory governments offer more direct incentives, including to

  • Households
  • Community groups
  • Schools
  • Business
  • Research and development organisations
  • Local government, and
  • State Government agencies

For example, the Western Australian Sustainability Energy Development Office lets you claim a AUS$500 rebate for natural gas-boosted solar water heaters. And AUS$700 for bottled LP gas-boosted solar water heaters, where used in areas without reticulated gas.

It also has a Remote Area Power Supply Program, which provides rebates for the installation of renewable energy power systems used instead of diesel generation by householders in off-grid areas of Western Australia.

It provides rebates of 55% of the capital cost of eligible equipment and services with a maximum of AUS$550,000.

Its Photovoltaic Rebate Program provides rebates for installation of both grid-connected and off-grid photovoltaic power systems. It's worth about $8,000!

All State and Territory governments have their equivalent programs and you should seek these out.

At this time I am not aware of a co-ordinated national database of State solar energy grants.

UK solar energy grants

By comparison £400 cashback grants are paid in the UK’s England and Wales for homeowners to fit solar water heating.

In Northern Ireland similar grants are £900 per home with Scotland paying 30% of the cost of a solar water heating system.

These grants are valid up to March 2006 after which some hold an expectation that they may be replaced by tough energy efficiency standards for homes.

Incentives for greater implementation of solar energy through grants are important

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was responsible for one of the greatest political transitions in recent history. He has also called for the world's biggest industrialized nations to set up a 50 billion dollar (44 billion euro) fund to support solar power, warning that oil or nuclear energy were not viable energy sources for the future. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair likewise has called for urgent action.

Most of all it’s up to you and me. Countries are not meeting their Kyoto Protocol goals and some never accepted them. An alternative block of Asian-Pacific countries has adopted no enforceable emission reduction targets.

Yes, through implementing renewable energy where we can—while picking up solar energy grants along the way-we can make a difference.

But the biggest difference may be achieved through behaving responsibly towards others and towards the environment.

Learning to behave like that comes through acceptance of limits, dependence and vulnerability as just part of life. Much of this has been unlearned as we have become more and more removed from the natural processes of life.

Reconnect, and engage positively with those aspects of life and seek to assist those who face them in a concentrated form. Like in disability. That’s the way to a sustainable world.

I grant you!

Technology is there to assist your life and mine. Not to shape our lives for us. There’s so much more to learn than about solar energy grants. Go, check out this link and my other pages. See you there...
