Solar/geothermal house incentives
by wes speer
(Lorton, Virginia)
Hi, I'm building a solar/geothermal house in Lorton, VA. See www.speerhouse.org for info. These systems are very expensive and I'm wondering if there is any grant money available for individual home owners to help off-set the expense.
I am already aware of the federal tax credit and Fairfax Counties reduction in property taxes initiative.
Any information you can give me will be most appreciated. Wes Speer wesspeer@cox.net 571-237-1137
-- Wes,
We are not aware of any incentives over and above what you are accessing already. Maybe the DSIRE database for Virginia has some other incentives you'd be able to take advantage of. As you probably know the US Treasury does not allow taxpayers eligible for the residential renewable energy tax credit to receive a U.S. Treasury Department grant instead of taking this credit.
The federal tax credit for residential energy property applies to solar-electric systems, solar water heating systems, fuel cells, small wind-energy systems and geothermal heat pumps.
A taxpayer may claim a credit of 30% of qualified expenditures for a system that serves a dwelling unit located in the United States and used as a residence by the taxpayer. Businesses may now take a cash grant instead of the tax credit.
